What is short mat bowls?

Don’t get confused by the name Short Mat. We have all seen professional indoor bowls on the television. Short mat bowls is very much the same but on a smaller scale. The bowls are the same size and the intention is the same, to bowl as close to the jack as possible. Luck and skill apply sometimes equally. It is a game for both genders, age is no barrier and we play all year summer and winter, so bad weather does not stop us playing.

You are welcome to come and meet us at our next coffee morning at Polegate Community Centre on Saturday 26th September 2026 10am – 12pm.

We do have a dress code and it is a condition of play that you must have the correct shoes. However if you have never played and do not have equipment, we do have some bowls which you may hire, and until you have correct shoes you can play in flat slipper-like moccasins or socks (check for holes before you leave home and remember we are not insured if you should have an accident and drop one of the bowls on your toes).
